Eating Disorders
Our registered dietitians bring their extensive training and experience from higher levels of care directly to our outpatient services. Each dietitian has over 15 years of experience in eating disorders and is committed to ensuring you receive compassionate, comprehensive, and focused support during every stage of your journey.
We treat the spectrum of eating disorders, including:
- Anorexia Nervosa
- Bulimia Nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder
- Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
- Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS)
What to expect from sessions with our dieticians (RDs) for each type of eating disorder:
Initial Assessment (60 minutes)
- We conduct a thorough nutritional assessment to identify any malnutrition, deficiencies, or medical complications related to the eating disorder.
- We design an individualized meal plan based on the patient’s age, growth needs (particularly in pediatric cases), metabolic needs, medical status, and treatment goals.
- We also assess the needs of families, caregivers and support system involvement for each individual to ensure comprehensive care.
- For all ARFID clients, we provide a plan and work closely with your medical team to assess reasons for avoidance (e.g., fear, sensory aversion, lack of interest in food/low appetite) and provide a plan that may include controlled exposure to these foods in follow up sessions.
Follow-Up Session (50 minutes)
- We work closely with the medical team to implement refeeding protocols safely and monitor for refeeding syndrome, which is critical at any age but particularly for children and adolescents whose development is at risk.
- We work to normalize eating by reintroducing a variety of foods and establishing regular, consistent eating patterns to break the cycle of restriction and/or binging.
- We believe that one of the most effective ways to learn and communicate about food is to share a meal. A shared meal between the dietitian and client provides hands-on tools for mindful and intuitive eating, building confidence with portions, and recognizing the body’s natural hunger cues. Evidence-based research shows that this practice is effective for eating disorder recovery as well as many other medical nutrition therapies. Depending on the client’s needs, an experiential visit may include in-office meals, grocery store outings, restaurant encounters and/or meeting at your home.
Collaboration and Ongoing Care
- We take a team approach. The RD is an essential member of the treatment team, communicating with physicians, therapists, and psychiatrists to ensure a consistent and integrated approach to care.
- We want to prevent relapses. Providing strategies for maintaining balanced eating and body acceptance long-term, equipping individuals with the tools to navigate challenges post-treatment.
Our Philosophy
We believe in individualized, unique support for different ages and stages of life.
For children and adolescents, we often utilize Family-Based Treatment (FBT) principles, empowering parents or caregivers to take charge of nutritional rehabilitation to restore their child’s weight and interrupt eating disorder behaviors. We focus on supporting healthy growth and development alongside nutritional recovery.
For adults, our focus shifts to self-management, intuitive eating principles, and addressing the specific challenges of maintaining recovery within an adult lifestyle (e.g., work, social life, independent living).
Our approach is a weight inclusive approach that prioritizes health and well-being without emphasizing weight to help improve diet and exercise-related health behaviors. This approach differs from the traditional weight-centric model.
